May 4th Scottish Independence Day
A Petition to The Scottish Parliament
The Scottish Jacobite Party has filed an e-petition with the Scottish Parliament to have May 4th declared a National
Holiday as Independence Day.
In view of the overwhelming public sentiment for a Free and Independent Scotland, this goal is likely to be approved by the voters on May 3rd 2007.
Freedom has been a foundation of Scottish political thought for centuries. The Declaration of Arbroath of 1320 commits these eloquent thoughts to paper.
Others have used the sword rather than the pen to express this fundamental right. Wallace and Bruce are Scottish Heroes who fought for their beliefs.
Anyone traveling through central Scotland will see the Wallace Monument in its majestic setting overlooking Stirling Bridge and Bannockburn. We honour
dead heroes who were prepared to die in the cause of Freedom for Scotland.
Freedom is not a cause of the Dead and Freedom is not Dead in Scotland. There should be a proper debate in the Scottish Parliament of the meaning of
Freedom and the implications of Independence.
I respectfully submit this petition to have the Scottish Parliament consider and debate making May 4th a Scottish National Holiday to be known as
Independence Day. A debate of this issue among the elected representatives of the Scottish people in the Scottish Parliament would hold up the meaning
of Freedom and Independence to political scrutiny, allow the arguments for and against to be considered in this National Forum and provide the Scottish
people with the necessary background to make an informed decision on May 3rd 2007.
The Scottish Parliament is the appropriate forum for a debate on Freedom and Independence for Scotland. There are elements of support from across
the Scottish Political spectrum however it is not clear if Freedom means the same thing to all concerned. In the restless urge to be Free, what exactly
are the restraints we seek to cut? To be Free is to be Independent. But what would Independence mean for Scotland?
This petition to have May 4th declared a Scottish National Holiday as Independence Day calls for the issues of Freedom and Independence to be
considered and debated by The Scottish Parliament.
